2023-24 FAQ’s - Frequently Asked Questions for travel teams

What is Clarington Renegades Baseball?

Clarington Renegades mission is to provide youth baseball players an opportunity to improve baseball skills through quality coaching and higher levels of competition. The Renegades strive to create a positive baseball experience for each player. Teams are composed of 10U through 18U players who love baseball and want to develop their skills and understanding of the game. Our teams strive to win by making maximum effort and competing with class. Player development and creating a quality baseball experience are our primary goal.

How many games do the Renegades play?

The number of games vary by team, however on average approximately 24-30 league games plus our playoffs and tournaments, so up to 40 games in total. The majority of league games are played as double headers on Saturdays and Sundays. Occasionally games are scheduled during the week.

How much does it cost to be on the Renegades?

The maximum charge per player is $1,700.  Some teams may charge less, but it will not exceed $1,700 per player.  In addition, each team generally holds fundraisers to offset fees as well.  We will be launching a new sponsorship program this year that will benefit individual players directly.

What does our fee include?

Uniforms, Winter Training, Tournaments, Insurance & League Fees. Pretty much everything.

Will you do any additional fundraising?

Yes, each team is open to do their own fundraising initiatives. The Clarington Renegades will also host a couple organizational fundraisers which will help offset administrative costs and a year-end banquet for the teams.  Each team will also generally get their own sponsors.

What league will the Renegades play in?

The Clarington Renegades are a member of the Fergie Jenkins Showcase League, named after one of two Canadian baseball players in the Baseball of Hall of Fame.

How many players on each Renegades team?

Teams will generally consist of 12 players, but there is no specific number we look to keep for each team.  Too many kids and it limits playing time.  Not enough and the potential for injuries could cause a real issue in regard to having to pull kids up or have kids playing positions that are not conducive to their strengths or the program’s goals.  As a coaching staff, we keep many things in mind when putting together each team in the program.

Do I require a release from my current team to play for the Clarington Renegades?

The answer is simple, NO! We do not require players to have a release from their current organization.

How do you manage pitch counts?

Pitch-count rules are in place to head off any temptation to over-tax a young arm. The Clarington Renegades use the MLB Pitch Smart Guidelines to protect our players. For more information you can visit https://www.mlb.com/pitch-smart/pitching-guidelines

Who determines who makes a team during the tryouts?

The Clarington Renegades promotes a fair and objective team building process. The decision to choose a player is based on the coaching staff at each age group. Players will be evaluated based on their skills, ability and desire to play.

Are current/past Renegades players required to participate tryouts each year?

Yes. The Renegades holds annual age-group open tryouts for all new players and current players. All players are required to tryout annually

Do I need to register my child for Renegades tryouts, or can I walk up?

Ideally, we would like all players pre-registered for tryouts so we have an idea of who will be attending. However, walk ups are also accepted

Do players tryout for specific positions or tryout for the team in general?

Players will try out for the team, not specific positions. However, if there are specific positions a player is interested in or has significant experience in, please note that to the coaches at the tryout.

Will players be rotated through the positions during the season or will they be assigned certain positions?

At the younger age groups, players will play more than one position during the season. The primary goal of these Renegade teams is to develop overall baseball skills. With our 12U and younger teams, players will have an opportunity to work on their skills at multiple positions.

How and when will I know if my child has made the team?

Coaches will make cuts and notify players during tryouts. We do not believe in sending a generic email or handing families a letter following a tryout letting them know their fate. Our coaches meet with every player and their family to let them know why they were not selected for the team and what they need to work on to improve for next season. Once all teams are confirmed, the roster will be posted on our website.

When is the money due?

An initial deposit or $500 will be due within 1 week of a player being picked for the team.  An additional payment will be made in November and the balance by February 28.  No refunds will be given for any reason, once fees are paid.
